Why Your Coated Glass Get Mildewed During Marine Shipping
In the float glass production process, soda ash is often used to help raw materials melting. Because the glass composition contains sodium oxide, when the glass is exposed to a high temperature and high humidity environment, an alkali reaction will occur. Rainbow-shaped marks can appear on glass surface and even in some cases glass sticking together and hard to separate them.
China is the world largest country producing, consume and export in the world, A large number of glass is moldy during storage and transportation every year. The same packaging method did not cause any problems during land transportation, but serious mold formation occurred during the marine transportation .Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mold formation under different conditions so that effective protective measures can be taken.
The magnetron sputtering process is widely used in the glass coating industry.During storage and transportation, the high temperature, high humidity, and high salt environment will deteriorate the stable film and cause large area of mold.

Why your coated glass been mildewed during marine shipping?
The Fluorine element in seawater is one of the main elements, and the fluorine content is 0.4~0.9 mg/kg. In the long-term shipping process, the PE plastic film used in glass packaging cannot prevent the intrusion of fluoride ions due to the large amount of seawater evaporation and the sea breeze and sea fog. In the high temperature and high humidity containers, the fluorine element Contact with the coated glass will corrode the SiO2 film on the surface of the coated glass , change the composition of the film, and lose its protective effect. A large amount of water vapor passes through the film and finally formed alkali elements.
When the temperature and humidity inside container change, the concentration of these alkali changes accordingly and finally causing serious mildew on glass surface.
The white spots of the coated glass are mainly caused by the fluorine-containing pollutants corroding the SiO2 film. Incomplete packaging and insufficient moisture-proof treatment will also cause the glass to mold. Under normal circumstances, glass production and deep processing companies use PE films for low-E coated glass packing and delivery, It has many advantages such as excellent chemical stability, water and moisture resistance, but its main disadvantage is poor oxygen barrier function.
To eliminate the possibility of coated glass mildew,it’s suggested to use vacuum packing instead of PE packing.
The mildew not only happens to coated glass, but also normal clear glass, and processed glass products.
During the ocean transportation of containers, the huge temperature difference between day and night on the sea makes the high temperature air locked in the container during the day meet a very low temperature at night to form a large temperature difference, which will form a “container rain” . It has a very adverse effect, and the excessive humidity of the package directly affects the glass surface appearance. It’s suggested to place container desiccant to effectively keep the container space dry.
